Latest News GARMIN LAKEVÜ HD ULTRA![]() Saturday, April 21, 2018 The following is how Garmin pro Greg Hackney uses the Garmin mapping. Success, for me, starts with my mapping. With the 1’ contours on Garmin mapping, I can just open the map and look at a lake I’ve never been on before, and a lot of times I can find “the spot.” Other times, the mapping gets me to the right area. I may not find the exact spot on the map, but I get to where I can fish my way into fish. You know, I never buy paper maps anymore. I used to always buy a TOPO map or three for event lakes because each map was slightly different. But Garmin mapping is so good, now it’s a waste of time to mess with paper maps. They’re a lot more precise than what we used to have. The technology – the transducers they use to make these maps – is actually giving us an accurate picture of the lake bottom. In a way, it’s almost like 3-D. And they cover shore to shore. To scout a lake, I just go out to my boat, flip on my Garmin combo and look at the mapping for that lake. Then, knowing what I know about the weather, time of year and fish habits, I’m able to fine-tune some spots for structure and such and drop waypoints on the map. That way, when I get to the lake, I already have waypoints I can go straight to. Often these spots are slightly different in structure. Once I find a spot with fish, I go to my mapping and just start looking for places on the lake with the same characteristics. Another thing: the bigger the screen on your plotter, the better. You can see a lot more map on a bigger screen. So if you’re wondering if a bigger screen is worth it … it is.
