TAKE 1st AND BIG BASS

With E-Factor Spinner baits

USA Bassin held its 3rd tournament for the USA Bassin Coffeen Lake Fall/Winter division. From start to finish tournament director Dan Blanton kept things going very nicely. There were 18 boats that fished the tournament. It was a cold day on the water with temps hovering in the mid 20’s throughout the day with a 10-20 mph South wind. The fish had finally appeared to start biting. The power plant kicked on about 3 weeks ago and the fish, I think, became acclimated to the warming water temps and water flow. It was nice to see that Coffeen Lake was turning on! There were reports of numerous anglers catching 50-100 fish throughout the day on a selection of baits. The anglers reported using everything from spinner baits and crank baits to centipedes and brush hogs. On with the stats!

First place and Big Bass went to the team of Bill Dearworth of Troy, IL and Jack Watkins of Swansea, IL. They weighed in a 5 fish limit tipping the scales at 12.27 pounds anchored by a big bass weighing 4.49 pounds. Jack and Bill reported culling through 5 additional fish over 15 inches and 40-50 fish under the 15-inch mark. They reported catching their limit in the mid lake area isolated weed beds in about 6 foot of water. Bill and Jack said all their fish came on E-Factor spinner baits. Bill was using a 3/8oz white spinner bait with diamond cut silver willow leaf blades. Jack was using a 3/8oz flesh colored spinner bait with straight willow leaf gold blades. They reported having to retrieve the bait very slowly to get the fish to bite.

Second place went to the well-known fish catching team of Jon Rinderer of Greenville, IL and Scott Sautman of Pocahontas, IL. They weighed a 5 fish limit weighing 10.58 pounds. Jon and Scott are fishing a tournament here on Sunday so no questions were asked of how they caught their fish.

Third place went to the team of Glenn Wells of Glen Carbon, IL and Donnie Chandler of Troy, IL. They weighed in a 5 fish limit weighing 10.05 pounds. Glenn and Donnie said they fished the hot water arm all day. They reported catching their fish in about 9 foot of water. They were using centipedes and brush hogs. They claimed the fish were “just going nuts.” The team said they probably caught about 100 fish throughout the day.

As you can read in the above information, the fishin was fabulous. There were a total of 82 fish weighed in for a total weight of 161.32 pounds. There were 13 five fish limits. The fishing is getting better at Coffeen Lake. Spread the word. Get a partner and come out and fish the next USA Bassin tournament held on January 23, 2010. USA Bassin has proven to be a competitive tournament circuit. The USA Bassin Tournament Trail is run with the utmost of values and integrity.

See ya on the water!
