Paul and Brian Cain
Three years ago the Cains started bass fishing. They have jumped to the front of the class. They can compete anywhere. They are above all else great people. I think that is what has made them great fishermen. The fishermen in my neck of the woods are willing to pass on any info that can help other fishermen. Brian is a retired Game Warden from northern Maine. He learned how to fish for trout and salmon, just to be able to eat. This was in his early years as a Park Ranger. His experience dealing with the public has been his greatest asset. Brian’s son Paul has become great in his own right.

He finally caught on a couple of years ago when my partner and I fished against them in a regional tournament. We were sharing info and Paul was scared to tell us where they had done well and were going to start. Brian told us in front of Paul. Brian told me later that Paul was mad that he had given away their spot. Paul has changed since then. We didn’t fish anywhere near his spot. He also learned that sharing is okay because the people still have to be able to fish the tackle right, to catch any fish. We all can tell people what we are using. That doesn’t mean they can fish it the way we do. There are always little secrets that make how we fish specific baits more effectively.

Paul and Brian have a very good relationship on the boat. They will start out with their favorite baits. When the fish are not cooperating, Brian will start throwing all the different stuff. If Brian finds something that is working better he lets Paul take that bait. Brian always fishes the back of the boat. Once Brian lets Paul have the hot bait he will not use that bait again. He then goes to big fish baits.

Maine had a little disruption in USA Bassin this winter. There was supposed to be a new outfit started that was going to compete with USA Bassin. Brian was the first one I called to check on his opinion on what he felt about changing. I knew what I felt about the whole deal, but wanted to know how the rest of the group felt. The unanimous decision was to stick with USA Bassin. I am very pleased that everybody felt USA Bassin was being run the way it should be. Kevin Yeary went out of way to correct a mistake, that created some hard feelings.

None of this was USA Bassin’s fault. I am also pleased at the continuing growth of USA Bassin in my area. This will be the third year for us. We are tackling some new lakes this year and I find it very exciting. I hope the hard water up here doesn’t get to thick, so we can start early. Cabin fever is already here.
