Next Generation Classic

Next Generation Classic

Wednesday, June 24, 2020

The team of Rick Cheatham and Trey Mckinney have won the Next Generation Classic. This marks their third straight victory at the event and the most recent win was this past weekend on Barkley Lake out of Prizer Point Marina.

The duo brought consistent limits to the scales weighing 15.67 and 15.52lbs to win the event by over four pounds with a two-day weight of 31.19lbs.

They reported that it was a "junk fishing" weekend with fish coming both shallow and deep on jigs and a Strike King Sexy Dawg topwater.

"The first day we started fishing shallow brush and water willows with jigs but didn't get a bite. Then we went to a stretch and got a limit on topwater," the team said and added that they then went to deeper brushpiles and drops.

The second day they expected the topwater bite to be on due to the drizzly weather but it never materialized. They started running other areas they found in practice and were able to put together the day's biggest limit to take home the win.

McKinney takes home $5,000 in general scholarship money for winning the tournament, bringing his three year total to an amazing $15,000 worth of scholarships. Due to winning three times, he is ineligible to compete again in this event next year but is grateful for the opportunity.

"It has been a crazy adventure and a lot of fun," said McKinney, now 15 years old.

Cheatham has been fishing with Trey since he was 11 years old and knew immediately that he was an excellent angler. "I noticed that right away and that his natural abilities are unbelievable. He is an extremely good angler and excellent mechanically with pitching and casting," he said. "Trey and I were blessed this past weekend at Lake Barkley again, the lake has been great to us and really fits the way we like to fish."

The team also took home an additional $500 for having a Garmin fishfinder mounted on their boat.
