Wild River Big Bass Classic

Wild River Big Bass Classic

Monday, May 06, 2024

The Wild River Big Bass Classic was held on Pickwick Lake during Champioship Week and offered a great chance for anglers already there to compete in another event. The format was all about the big bass and there were some dandies weighed in, including the winning bass caught by Jeff Mullen and Jeremy New. That 6.58lb fish was good enough to take home the top prize and a $5,000 check.

Mullen and New used this event as a practice for other events including the Bass Cat Classic and LAND BIG FISH Tournament Of Champions.

"We spent alot of our time scanning bars and looking for fish out on the main river ledges," New said. "We found alot of milfoil and eelgrass, but the big fish came on an old laydown that was on the down current side. It had washed down and was sitting in 6 or 8 feet of water."

Since this was a big bass tournament, they were trying to target bigger bites and New was throwing a swimbait. "I caught one about 4 pounds on that laydown right away and then got hung up," he said. "We didn't know the laydown was even there until I went up to get my bait back and I saw it. I told him to throw out to it and he sets the hook on a big one."

The team had been catching plenty of drum, so questioned whether or not it was a bass. "I said 'is that a bass?' and then it came to the surface," New said. "We both knew that was one the one we needed."

The fish came on a jig of Mullen's making, a 7/16-ounce Screw Ball Jig from Last Cast Jigs in the #55 color with a Yamamoto Flappin' Hog as the trailer.
