Latest News May: Tip Of The Month![]() Monday, May 13, 2013 Want to get around the fishing pressure on your favorite lake? Pick up a fly rod and slip into a float tube. Bass see a lot more plastic worms, spinnerbaits and crankbaits than they do bass poppers or Wooly Buggers, so a lifelike fly might be a novelty. Now's the time to try it. Bass are relatively shallow in most of the country during May because they're either in the spawning mode or just finishing up. The float tube not only gives you access to areas that shore anglers can't reach, it provides the stealth required to sneak up on wary bass. Standard fly gear for bass is an 8, 9 or even a 10-weight outfit, but you can go with a lighter weight outfit if you're more comfortable using it. A weight forward line is best because it helps you cast bulky flies into the wind much easier. If you're after heart-stopping surface strikes, choose poppers with a flat or slightly slanted face so that they create a definite popping sound as you work them. Good luck and have a great day on the water!!
