Southern Illinois Regional

Sunday, September 15, 2013

136 teams took to Rend Lake for the Southern Illinois Regional. Tournament Director Mike Glenn explained that Rend Lake is notoriously tough fishing, but the weather was ideal. ‘We had low 70’s and it was really nice. Out of 136 boats we only had 16 limits and quite a few teams didn’t catch a fish today,” said Glenn.

In First Place was the team of Larry Page and Sean Viernum who had a 16.16 bag of Rend Lake bass. They fished hard all day and caught a total of nine keepers. “We had a really good day, it’s usually pretty tough fishing but we have fished this lake more this year than we have in the past,” added Viernum. The team caught their fish throughout the day on a crankbait and zoom finesse worm fished on a homemade shakyhead jig. They keyed on shallow rocks and wood from 1-4ft deep. For the win, the two brought home over $5,100.

2nd Place was Randy Banes and Barry Joy who had a limit worth 15.35lbs. The local team explained that they had a tough morning before the fish starting biting around midday. “At 11:00 we had two fish and we ended up catching about 8 keepers throughout the day. We had two over four pounds and the rest were solid keepers” said Banes. A jig and crankbait were the top producers. For their finish the team won over $2,300.

In Third Place was Doug Bates and Joel Trovillion who even though they were one short of a limit. “We lost a few more that would have been our fifth keeper and also caught lots of short fish,” added Travillion. The team caught their fish by using a squarebill and spinnerbait.

The Big Bass of the tournament was caught by the team of Dylan Rock and Jeff Farmer with a 5.90lb bass.

The Southern Illinois Region would like to thank Mt. Vernon Mariner and Interstate Batteries for their support and donations to the pre-tournament raffle. The next season will begin in April 2014.
