Lucas Oil Tournament Of Champions

Lucas Oil Tournament Of Champions

Saturday, May 10, 2014

The Lucas Oil Tournament of Champions is exactly that, it is the tournament during Championship week that brings together the team of the year from each of the USA Bassin divisions and awards a guaranteed $10,000 first prize - all with no entry fees for the champion teams.

The champion of the champions was Jim Young and Glen Young with 20.54lbs. Although they ended up with over 20lbs, their day started off slowly. "We only had two small keepers in the early morning and then around 10:00 we caught three nice fish in a row. We were catching them on homemade black and blue jigs near channel swings that brought the depth to 6 or 7 feet right next to the bank," said Young. Their winning total was the only bag to exceed the 20lb mark.

Second place was Bob Robinson and Gary Hill with 19.78lbs. Hill recounted the day and said that they had a small limit in the first twenty minutes before starting to upgrade their weight. "We had two 5's and three 3's for our weight and were catching them all shallow in the bushes with Baby Brush Hogs. We lost our lower unit at 11 and had to stop fishing completely then and we were all the way down to the Paris bridge," said Hill. They were fortunate to be found by a fellow competitor and were able to get towed all the way back in, saving their entire tournament. They are very grateful for the sportsmanship shown by Brandon Gladish and Aaric Correll.

Third place was the nephew and uncle team of Steve and Lance Freeman who had a limit weighing 18.14lbs. They both had success in the earlier Tracker cup and had a plan going into this event. "We planned on fishing shallow since some of the fish were still on beds but they were gone and we only caught one doing that so we went out to the ledges and starting catching them with crankbaits and swimbaits. Then we stuck with that all day long and caught about ten keepers," added Steve Freeman.

Big bass of the event was Dewayne Lamb and Mike Sustek with a 7.37lb largemouth.
