Florida State Regional

Florida State Regional

Friday, September 12, 2014

The recent U.S.A. Bassin Florida Regional was as close as you can get, it ended in a tie. Two teams ended the two day event with exactly the same weight, 33.47lbs. The tiebreaker went to the team with the biggest bass and both of them had a big one, with King and Wylie's 8.86 beating out Patterson and Smith who had a 7.03lb bass. Amazingly, the two teams weighed nearly identical bags both days with their day one bags being 11. 20 and 11.18 and the day two bags being nearly double that at 22.29 and 22.27!

Scott King recalls how they almost lost the event due to their decision to come in early during the stormy weather. "It was bittersweet because I really thought I had lost the event for us by deciding to come in a few hours early when the storm came up. We had over 22lbs and I thought we had it sewn up, but then at the weigh-in we heard they had 22lbs as well and I thought we had lost it," said King, King's partner Chris Wylie caught the biggest bass of his life, the 8.86lber to go with an 8lb fish caught by King. They used topwaters in the morning and then switched to crankbaits in the afternoon.

Dave Smith and Rich Patterson lost the tiebreaker and finished 2nd despite a great weight on day two. "We fished a shelbed and had a limit by 9:00 each day by fishing soft plastics," said Smith. They were surpirsed at how tough the fishing was on Day 1 when only 11lbs was leading the event. "It was overcast, which is usually really good here in Florida, but it was tough for everyone," said Smith.

Third Place was the team of Don Eady and Kenny Bivins with a two day total of 32.69, right behind the top two finishers.

Congratulations to all of our Florida teams and thank you for fishing with U.S.A. Bassin!
