KY-10 Guist Creek Divisional Champions Interviews and Results

KY-10 Guist Creek Divisional Champions Interviews and Results

Monday, July 20, 2009

The sixteen teams fishing the U.S.A. Bassin KY-10 Guist Creek division on July 18, 2009, were greeted with cool morning temps in the upper 50’s and a high temp of only 72f. This ended up being a record low high temp to date. With the cool temps and cloudy skies it proved to be a refreshing change to the usual hot 90’s this time of year. The water temp was even low at around 80f when it is typically in the uppers 80’s.

The talk of the morning was; what are the cool temps going to do to the fishing? But, the even bigger question for the top two teams in the point standings (Woodruff/Wilson 1st and Watts/Duckworth 2nd) was who will win the Divisional Points Championship today? Only 10 total points separated the top two teams going into this last event of the year.

At the weigh-in all but one team managed to catch a keeper. Team Watts/Duckworth made a charge for the win and Divisional Points Championship surprising everyone with a limit of 15.51lbs. anchored by a 5.95lb big bass. Team Woodruff/Wilson were only able to weigh-in (2) bass for a total of 3.17lbs for ninth place. But, it was good enough to win the Divisional Points Championship by a mere two points! They also took home bonus cash of $260 for winning Big Bass of the Year for their 8.51lb bass caught on April 11, 2009. Team Watts/Duckworth went on to take first place and big bass of the event.

DIVISION POINTS CHAMPIONS: Greg Woodruff and Bobby Wilson

“It was a close race for the Points Championship. This is a well run tournament, and we enjoy fishing it! Having a Big Bass for the Year Pot is very nice. We also like how the point system is setup. Only thing we would like to see changed is to have an off limits time before the tournament. We look forward to fishing the Regional and the Classic tournament.”  - Woodruff/Wilson

The top three teams that received a check:

First Place/Big Bass team Watts/Duckworth caught their fish on the main lake drops/ledges using crankbaits, jigs, and soft plastics. Their limit came shallow, but the bigger fish were deep.

“We had a good feeling it would be a good day of fishing for us! Feels great that our day of fishing finally all came together for us today! We enjoyed fishing this well run and organized tournament. There are a lot of friendly anglers in this division. A great group of anglers! We plan to fish this division for years to come!  - Watts/Duckworth

Second Place went to team King/Hall with a limit of 8.75lbs. The team fished mostly wood/mud banks shallow to deep in Tick Creek using soft plastics in the morning.

“It was good fishing today. This is a good well run tournament trail to fish with nice anglers to fish with!”   -James Hall

Third Place went to team Hires/Hickman with (4) fish total of 8.18lbs. The team fished in the creek on rock/wood banks shallow to deep using Junebug finesse worms. Most fish were caught in the mid-morning.

“We thought it would be a good day of fishing with a lot of active fish. But, when we couldn’t get bites on faster moving baits or big baits we decided to slow down and fish finesse baits. This proved to be the ticket. I just wish we made the change a little sooner. It might have put another keeper or two in the boat.”  -Justin Hires
