Thompson and Murray take home $10k!
The LAND BIG FISH Tournament Of Champions was a fitting end to a week full of championship events on Pickwick Lake. The event featured a guaranteed first place prize of $10,000 and the team of Shane Thompson and Scott Murray walked away with the big payout after catching 24.07lbs of fish, which included a 7.45lb kicker.
The winners fished both the Bass Cat Silver Cup and Wild River Big Bass Classic before this event and credit those two events for helping them win the Tournament of Champions.
"We fished the Silver Cup and had a really good practice but didn't do well in the event," said Thompson. "That forced us to scratch that plan and start practicing again. The last spot we found during the Big Bass Classic ended up being our winning area for the TOC."
In the Big Bass Classic, they caught a 5.17lb fish that clued them into the area. "That's where we started on a 100-yard stretch for the TOC," said Thompson. "We had a quick limit of around 10lbs and then went down a little ways to a ledge point and culled everything out in 45 minutes with moving baits."
Included in that flurry was the 7.45lb fish that made them believe they had a good shot to win. In the end, they won by over 5 pounds. The team generally fishes Lake Cumberland and Douglas Lake and this was just their second trip to Pickwick, but they walked away with the big check.
