Knepp and Worland win.
The Ranger Classic featured a first place prize of a new Ranger Z519 and Mercury 225hp outboard. The two-day event on Kentucky Lake was a close one as the top teams battled it out for the win.
Taking first was Jeremy Knepp and BJ Worland with a two-day total of 38.81lbs. While their weight may look good, it was anything but easy according to Worland. "Each day at lunchtime we had one or two fish. We caught them all late in the day on both days," he said. They also only had seven or eight keepers each day but they were the right ones.
The team fished Kentucky Lake and said the key was fishing slow. "We caught them on jigs and a Carolina-Rig, but you had to fish it very slowly," they said. They landed a 6.61lb kicker on the second day and that proved to be the difference.
Taking second place was Mason and Tony Fleetwood with 37.58lbs. This team won the Lucas Oil Tournament of Champions earlier in the week. They fished Motion Fishing jigs in both events and said they caught quite a few more keepers during this event. "In the other event we only caught seven but both days during this event we caught 15 to 20 keepers," they said. The team focused on water that was between seven to 12-feet deep in both events.
Third place was Mark Kirby and Ben Cherry with 37.14lbs. They fished south of Paris and had a long run to their fish each day but found a great morning bite. "By around 8:00 the bite we were on died. We were catching them on swimbaits. After that, we headed to the bushes with a homemade spinnerbait." said Kirby.
